History

Gadsden County Florida Alumnae Chapter’s history began with several members of the sorority residing in Gadsden County. These members, determined to honor their commitment to public service and the work of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, joined the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter, in Tallahassee, Florida. Commuting twenty or more miles to Tallahassee for meetings, public service projects, and programs was sometimes difficult, but they continued to serve. Before the chartering of the Gadsden Chapter, a group of local members organized themselves as Gadsden Area Deltas and provided public service throughout Gadsden and surrounding communities, as well as provided supplies to the troops in the Gulf War. Realizing that a Chapter could positively impact the needs of the community through public service efforts outlined in our 5 Point Programmatic Thrust, discussions regarding chartering a Delta chapter in Gadsden County began and was welcomed by local members and supported by members of the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter. Members moved forward under the dynamic and determined local leadership of Inez Holt and our Southern Regional Director, Dr. Louise A. Rice. On Friday, May 17, 1991 the Gadsden County Florida Alumnae Chapter (GCFLAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered. Twenty four members from Gadsden (FL), Leon Counties (FL), Decatur and Thomas Counties (GA) signed the Charter. Inez Holt served as the Chapter’s first President. The first initiation ceremony for new members was held in 1997, with 16 ladies being initiated. Since its chartering, the chapter has instituted, established, and participated in a variety of workshops, service projects, and programs servicing Gadsden County in keeping with the Sorority’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust.
